DIR Conducts Survey to Locate “Green” Jobs for Alabamians

MONTGOMERY — In an effort to better understand and utilize Alabama’s Green job
market, the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Labor Market Information
Division will partner with Brandt Information Services Inc. to conduct a survey which
seeks to expand the state’s employment horizons. The survey will be conducted amongst
a random sample of employers across the state and workforce development regions.

The survey has four main objectives:

• Identify Green employers
• Find Green Industry and Occupational employment for the State of Alabama
• Find out what special skills are required for Green-related jobs
• Locate current vacancy needs in both green and non-green related occupations.
The survey, which lasts about 15 minutes, will continue through September 30,
2009. A customer service representative will be used to guide the employer through the
process. Brandt will also be able to access company websites that already include
information on their Green initiatives and job availabilities and utilize this information
for the survey. The identity and responses of all survey respondents will be kept strictly
confidential. The data will be published by workforce development regions and will not
identify any specific companies without prior permission from the employer.

Tom Surtees, Director of the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations
believes the survey is a positive step in the right direction. “This survey will be a great
indicator of what is to come for the State of Alabama in the Green job market,” said
Surtees. “More and more companies are making an effort to ‘go green’ and it’s important
that we know what kinds of jobs will be available and how to train our workforce
accordingly.”
